What does your job entail?
As a Developer of New Assistance at the Red Cross, I uphold our core value of humanity in every aspect of our work. This entails deeply understanding the needs of those we serve, involving them in decision-making processes, and fostering open communication. Essential qualities for this role include strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, innovative thinking, a profound understanding of Dutch culture, and analytical prowess. Our primary objective is to empower communities by recognizing their strengths and collaboratively devising impactful solutions.
In this role, I engage directly with communities to identify their needs and preferences to design and implement assistance initiatives. I develop and pilot new assistance proposals, refine existing ones and explore innovative financing models. I also contribute to processes that support diverse forms of assistance, such as helpdesks and digital information platforms.
My background in the humanitarian sector and experience in developing and implementing new services equip me to excel in this role. I inspire and motivate others to align with our objectives and I have experience with needs research and translation into actionable strategies and customer journeys. I speak multiple languages which enhances my effectiveness in connecting with diverse communities and stakeholders.
How did you end up joining the Netherlands Red Cross?
Upon arriving in the Netherlands, my drive to assist others and humanitarian passion made me seek a job with positive societal impact. This comes from my experience with crisis situations in Syria and Iraq. I first started volunteering with the Red Cross, in the role of Cultural Advisor. This allowed me to leverage my humanitarian background and my communication skills. I also drew from my own journey as an asylum seeker and refugee in the Netherlands, offering insights and solutions to challenges faced by my colleagues.
I am steadfast in my drive and commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive communities. So, I applied for the role I currently have. Here my focus shifted towards amplifying the voices of vulnerable populations through the implementation of community engagement and accountability initiatives.
My journey in the Netherlands has been defined by a continuous dedication to humanitarian causes and a firm belief in the collective effort required to cultivate a healthier and more equitable society for all its members.
What would you like to say to a new colleague?
Moving to a new country presents its own unique set of challenges, especially when the language and work culture are unfamiliar. However, I've received incredible support from my colleagues. Despite Dutch not being my native language, my colleagues have gone above and beyond to assist me, by clarifying trivial questions or helping me navigate cultural norms that may differ from what I was accustomed to.
What's truly remarkable is that I never felt out of place or uncomfortable asking for help. On the contrary, my colleagues have created a safe and inclusive environment where I feel empowered to express myself freely and address concerns. This supportive atmosphere has allowed me to establish connections across departments, and I'm genuinely thrilled whenever I'm approached to lend a hand. It's incredibly rewarding to feel that my contributions are not only valued but also recognized and appreciated by those around me.
For anyone seeking professional growth and a workplace where diversity is celebrated and support readily available, I wholeheartedly recommend this environment. It's essential to take the time to understand how things operate here, but rest assured, you'll find the support and encouragement you need every step of the way.
If you're passionate about making a positive impact in society and helping others without discrimination, then this is undoubtedly the place for you to thrive professionally and make a meaningful difference.
Can you say something about your development at the Red Cross?
