What does your job entail?
In my role, I support relief activities in shelters and at events. I mainly do this behind the scenes. This includes planning, logistics, and communication, but also ensuring that our Relief Coordinators and relief workers have the right materials and information. I like that I can help to ensure that everything runs smoothly so that others can do their work well in the field.
How did you end up joining the Red Cross?
A few years ago, I started volunteering in event assistance. It was mainly out of curiosity and because I wanted to do something useful alongside my work. I soon realized that this really suited me. The atmosphere and the feeling that you are doing something that matters made me stay with the organization. When the opportunity arose to do this work on a permanent basis, I jumped at it.
What do you like most about the job and the organization?
Without a doubt, the people. Everyone works at the Red Cross for a reason. You can feel that we all want to help people in need. My work behind the scenes also has an impact. It's great to see that what we prepare ultimately leads to real help for someone. That makes the work worthwhile.
What would you like to say about your development at the Red Cross?
I started out in the field, as an aid worker at events. That's why I know what's going on at locations. Now I'm more on the support side, but that actually helps me to bridge the gap between policy and practice. The Red Cross has given me a lot of confidence in that regard. I'm constantly learning new things.
